Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. The needles are very fine and often barely felt. You may notice a brief sensation when a needle is placed, such as a dull ache, warmth, tingling, or heaviness - this is completely normal and usually settles quickly.
I’ll always check in and make sure you’re comfortable. If anything doesn’t feel right, needles can be adjusted or removed straight away. Treatments are always guided by how you’re feeling, and we go at a pace that feels right for you.
What does acupuncture feel like?
Once the needles are in, most people feel calm, heavy, or deeply relaxed. Some people even fall asleep during treatment. It’s also normal to feel more aware of sensations in your body as things begin to shift.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes - acupuncture is very safe when practised by a qualified practitioner. I use single-use, sterile needles and follow strict hygiene and safety guidelines as a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC). I am also fully insured, so you can feel confident that your treatment is safe, professional, and well regulated.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies from person to person and depends on what you’re coming for, how long symptoms have been present, and how your body responds. Some people notice changes after just a few sessions, while others need a longer course of treatment.
In most cases, I recommend starting with 4–6 weekly treatments, particularly for more long-standing or chronic concerns. As things improve, the aim is always to reduce the frequency, with some people choosing occasional or seasonal ‘maintenance’ treatments. We’ll review progress together and adjust treatment plans as needed.
Are there any side effects?
Most people feel relaxed or energised after treatment. Occasionally, you might feel tired, emotional, or notice a temporary change in symptoms as your body adjusts. Mild bruising or tenderness at needle sites can sometimes occur but usually resolves quickly.
What should I wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal but not essential. I often need access to areas below the elbows and knees, and occasionally the back or abdomen. But if clothing is difficult to adjust, gowns are provided, and towels and blankets are always used to keep you warm and comfortable.
Can I have acupuncture alongside conventional medical treatment?
Yes. Acupuncture is often used alongside Western medicine and other therapies. It’s important that you continue any prescribed medication unless advised otherwise by your GP or consultant. If you’re under medical care, please let me know so treatments can be adapted appropriately.
Acupuncture can support a wide range of physical and emotional concerns, as well as general wellbeing. It’s commonly used to help with things such as stress and anxiety, sleep issues, pain, digestive concerns, headaches, hormonal health, fertility support, and fatigue. You don’t need a specific diagnosis to benefit - many people come because they feel out of balance or want support through a period of change.
What can acupuncture help with?
I’m nervous - what if I don’t like needles?
This is very common. Treatments can be adapted to suit you, and I always work gently. The initial treatment often involves fewer needles, and everything is explained beforehand. There’s no pressure - we go at a pace that feels right for you.
What if acupuncture isn’t right for me?
There’s never any obligation to continue with treatment. It’s important that you feel comfortable and that it feels like a good fit. I’m always happy to answer questions or talk things through.
